Esperanza
Volunteer work in La Esperanza, Trujillo-Peru consists of travelling to the poorest areas in order to find students who are eligible to attend classes for free. The fact that the classes are for free sometimes is not enough motivation to obtain students from these areas. Therefore, volunteers work with Manuel Silva who accompanies them as they enter into these poor areas in order to help speak with local families. In doing so, Horizon hopes that such work will convince families to send their children to the free language classes.
Not only do volunteers speak with families residing in the poorer sections of La Esperanza, but they also aid by seeking out students from the local schools. The local schools in La Esperanza only provide one hour of English lessons per week. Therefore, Horizon hopes to aid these students by offering them English lessons four hours out of the week. Finally, volunteers are required to teach a few hours out of the day, all of which is dependent on the students the volunteer finds. For example, if while recruiting students from the poorer sections of La Esperanza it becomes apparent that an adult class is in need, then a class for adults may possibly be formed.
Volunteer work in La Esperanza may not be for everyone, due to the fact that the teaching may require some ingenuity. Currently, there is a lack of books at Horizon and thus volunteers must make up for this lack through the use of such things as the internet and the
