Espaanglisch
Our students:
The school initially provided low-cost classes to adults when it was founded in 2005. Over time, services were increased to include children as well. We currently run Basic English classes for children from the extremely impoverished neighbourhood of El Porvenir, as well as Basic English and Conversation Classes for adults. Students in the Basic English Classes are volunteers with affiliated organizations and as a result attend for free. Conversation Class students are mainly lower income Peruvians who hope to improve their English in order to gain better employment, such as on cruise ships. Conversation classes are provided at a low cost.
Our Aim:
Our aim is to provide quality language education to those in Trujillo who routinely miss out on quality education due to a lack of money. In Peru education is not free so, quite simply, those with little money cannot afford an education, let alone a quality education.
Why English?
Here in Peru, just like the rest of the world, English as a Second Language is becoming (whether for better or worse) more and more of a necessity. In Peru, to obtain a university degree or master’s degree in some fields, it is now necessary to be proficient in English. Furthermore, in Peru, tourism is a burgeoning field which provides thousands and thousands of jobs. Considering that the majority of tourists who arrive don't speak Spanish, those working with tourists need to know English. Finally, a gateway for many Peruvians out of poverty is employment on American cruise ships, for which individuals also must be proficient in English. For these reasons, we believe the provision of English classes is of high importance to assist individuals break free of poverty, which unfortunately is a reality for the majority of Peruvians.
Curriculum:
As part of our goal to provide quality education, Espaanglisch uses up-to-date materials for all of our classes. We teach English according to the Communicative Method, which takes a flexible approach to language teaching with a focus on the ability to communicate as the primary goal.
In terms of material, for our adult classes we use the Interchange series, and for our children´s classes, the English In Mind series.
Teachers:
We recruit native or fluent English speaking volunteers from all over the world to teach English at our school. We carefully select our volunteers to ensure that they will bring enthusiasm, creativity and professionalism to the classroom. We also look for volunteers who are committed to working with us and have the right approach to living abroad, so they can adjust to life in Peru with ease. David, the founder of Espaanglisch, and Elizabeth, the Program Coordinator, are on hand to provide volunteers with an introduction to the local area as well as teaching guidance if required. Off Site Volunteer Coordinator Crystal Moshenko is also available for support if needed. Our belief is that if volunteers are happy and secure, they will bring this into the classroom and in the end the students will benefit. We also want our volunteers to have a positive experience volunteering with us, and a memorable time in Peru.
