Carita de Plátano NGO Volunteer Information. (auf Deutsch hier klicken)

students Carita de Plátano is a non profit organization that has a school located in the "Pueblo Jóven" (shanty town) of Miramar, Peru (outside of Trujillo). The project is a multifaceted approached designed to structure a quality education that will be of lifetime use to its students. Students of the school have typically been left out of public school systems thereby losing the only route to equip them with the education and skills that will allow them to escape the cycle of poverty that exists in Miramar. Carita de Plátano NGO takes a community level approach to its program working with families, community leaders, other learning institutions and professionals to provide its students with a high quality education. The team meets every two weeks to review progress made and discuss individual students who demonstrate problems.

The school currently provides basic education students and vocational education to residents of the community. In addition special studentseducation is provided as well as arts and sports programs aimed at including students in the community and improving socialization techniques. Volunteer labor is of great help to the school. While classes must be taught by Peruvian teachers given the need to understand the curriculum and communicate effectively with the children, volunteer presence is by no means wasted.

studentsVolunteers help organize the children, teach English, help out in art class, play, and add to the general education of the kids. While Trujillo is a tourist destination the kids in “Salaverry or Miramar” do not get to meet or work with foreigners. The volunteer program at the school also offers a cultural exchange for the children (and the volunteers) that is rarely available in other educational facilities.

Espaanglisch
language school in Chimbote Volunteer information.

Currently, Espaanglisch is the only cost effective language school in Chimbote. We use native volunteer instructors and teach students of all ages. Volunteers not only have the chance to live in and experience Peru, but in return for their help, they are offered a number of services at a reduced cost and are given free Spanish lessons.

Chimbote SunsetEspaanglisch needs to exist in Chimbote for two reasons. The primary mode of commerce in Chimbote is fishing and therefore, it has been difficult for Chimbote to obtain sufficient resources to implement high quality language education. Secondly, because there is a growing importance of foreign language skills, a deficiency in language education only perpetuates the economic and social disparities that exist here. However, there is much to be excited about today in Chimbote and so as the area continues to grow, so should its interest language education and the popularity of services that Espaanglisch provides.

At approximately ten dollars a month Espaanglisch students receive classes from Tuesday to Friday and every class is just hour and a half.
